HANDBAG ART

What's the story with all of the purses?

Playful, Embellished Handbags and Clutches

Dee Dee Russell created handbag art in the 1980's. Often imitated never duplicated you know a DEE DEE RUSSELL when you see it!

Based in San Francisco, they add an original spin to accessories using textured paints sparkly glitters and sometimes neon colors influenced by San Francisco bohemia, Las Vegas and the pop art of Andy Warhol.

I have spent decades perfecting the art of transforming discarded canvas, ties and purses into new again, Some time ago I was going through an extreme 1960's pop culture trip inspired by Motown, Andy Warhol's pop art and the fashion styling of Edie Sedgwick star of Andy's "Silver 60's" underground movies. Many memories of my dear Mother snapping open her gigantic purses.

Handbags were very important in my life during my makeup artist days at that time I fronted a band balled the Hot Combs and always had a big purse dangling on my wrist. Also during this time I was on the poetry open mike scene and needed more than the usual publicity so one fine San Francisco night I colored a black and white photo of Edie Sedgwick, glued it to a purse, and was off and running as a designer and serious crafter.
